Lives and works in Tokyo, Japan

Takashi MURAKAMI

Takashi Murakami, who has a PhD in nihonga painting, combines the most cutting-border techniques with the precision and virtuosity of traditional Japanese fine art. Inspired by manga and kawaii culture, his irresistible world is peopled by monstrous and mannerly characters akin, facetiously portrayed equally descendants of past myths. His theory of the superflat aesthetic, which he introduced in 2001 with the trilogy exhibition he curated (the third part was titled "Little Boy," a reference to the lawmaking proper name for the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945), attempts to mistiness the boundaries between pop fine art and high fine art; the superflat movement has explored the evolution of Nippon's understanding of its mail service-Hiroshima condition and the interrelationships betwixt vanguard art, manga and anime, and their forerunner, ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The absence of perspective, the two-dimensionality of aboriginal Japanese art, filters into every medium.

Since his first monographic exhibition outside Japan in 1995 at Perrotin, Murakami has accomplished recognition as ane of the most prominent contemporary artists of his time, and his work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums and fine art institutions throughout the globe.

by Sarah Thornton

An excerpt from Sarah Thornton'due south 7 Days in the Art World

"An artist is a necromancer," said Takashi Murakami, every bit he saturday at the main workstation of his Rippongi Hills studio, a 16-foot-long table in the centre of a large room surrounded by four designers and 5 animators. The statement was cryptic. Did he mean a dark wizard? A high priest? Someone who can talk to the expressionless? Murakami's piece of work bears witness to his many years as an otaku science-fiction geek and obsessive manga fan. Murakami continued, "An artist is someone who understands the border between this world and that one… Or someone who makes an effort to know it." Certainly Murakami'due south work sits between many universes—art and cartoon, yin and yang, Jekyll and Hyde—but present the artist is by no ways an aimless dreamer. "I change my management or continue in same direction by seeing people'due south reaction," he admitted. "My concentration is how to survive long-term and how to join with the contemporary feeling. To focus on zip besides profit is, past my values, evil. Just I work past trial and error to be popular."

Murakami is an avowed Warhol fan, so I asked him what he did not like most the American pop artist. Murakami frowned and groaned. "I like everything," he said finally, a Warholian respond if ever there was one. "Warhol's genius was his discovery of easy painting," he explained. "I am jealous of Warhol. I'g always asking my blueprint team, 'Warhol was able to create such an easy painting life, why our work and so complicated?' Merely the history knows! My weak point is my oriental groundwork. Eastern flavor is too much presentation. I remember it is unfair for me in the contemporary fine art battlefield, merely I take no choice because I am Japanese."

When I quoted Warhol's famous line "Existence good in business is the most fascinating kind of art . . . Making money is art and working is fine art and adept business is the all-time fine art," Murakami laughed and said, "That is a fantasy!"
